Manipur: Mob attack on Assam Rifles camp, stone pelting, vandalism and vehicles set on fire

A violent mob attacked the camp of Assam Rifles in Senapati district of Manipur late on Tuesday night. The mob tried to pelt stones, vandalize and arson the camp. According to Assam Rifles, a search operation was conducted in Makuilongdi area after receiving intelligence about the presence of some armed cadres of NSCN (IM). Information had also surfaced on social media about cadres roaming around with weapons and uniforms, which was said to be a violation of ceasefire rules.

Local people, including a large number of women, participated during the operation. He said that the security forces were stopped from moving forward. After this, the security forces exercised restraint and talked to the local representatives and assured that the village would not be entered without permission.

Security forces fired tear shells in defense

Here at around 9:30 pm, a large number of people reached the Assam Rifles camp and tried to pelt stones, vandalize and arson. To control the situation, security forces fired blank bullets (blank fire) and tear gas shells. During this time, Manipur Police and CRPF also cooperated in the action.

During the violence, a light vehicle of Assam Rifles was set on fire, while two trucks were overturned and damaged. A private car also caught fire. The situation was completely brought under control by midnight after the joint action of security forces, Manipur Police and CRPF. There is no information about any civilian or security force personnel being injured in the incident. At present there is peace in the area and the administration is keeping an eye on the situation.

Explosive substance recovered

In separate incidents here, a large cache of arms, ammunition and explosives has been recovered during operations conducted in Imphal West, Imphal East and Churachandpur districts of Manipur since Tuesday. During the operation, a person was arrested with an assault rifle and a pistol.

On Wednesday morning, a joint team of Manipur Police and 33 Assam Rifles conducted a raid and recovered arms and ammunition hidden from Ishok Mamang Leekai near Loktak Lake under Wangoi police station in Imphal West district.
