This is a big gift from the government for the sanitation workers in Punjab. The government said that along with the sanitation workers who have completed five years of service on contract, the employees appointed on contract in the year 2021 will also get the benefit of this decision. He said that instructions have been given to all the municipal corporations to send proposals as soon as possible so that the process of regularization can be expedited.
Punjab Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains has informed about this decision. He said that all the municipal bodies will pass a resolution in the House meeting and send it to the Local Government Department, which will immediately approve it. According to the government, after completion of 5 years of service, the sanitation workers will be made permanent and their increased salary will be effective from August 1.
Employees recruited in 2021 will also get benefits
The Minister said that along with the sanitation workers who have completed five years of service on contract, the employees appointed on contract in the year 2021 will also get the benefit of this decision. He said that instructions have been given to all the municipal corporations to send proposals as soon as possible so that the process of regularization can be expedited.
Harjot Bains said that sanitation workers and sewer workers working on outsourced basis will also be given relief. Employees who have completed three years of service on outsourced basis will be appointed on contract basis.
Agreement between government and employee unions
After the meeting with the sanitation workers, an agreement has been reached between the government and the employee unions. The minister said that the increased salary of sanitation workers will be effective from August 1. Earlier the monthly salary of these employees was around Rs 10,500, which was increased to Rs 14,000 last month. Now it has been decided to increase the salary during the probation period to Rs 20,500 per month.
Controversy after Barnala lathicharge
On July 22, the police had lathicharged the sanitation workers protesting for their demands in Barnala Anubhav. After this, organizations of Valmiki Samaj and sanitation workers started protesting. The Punjab government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case and the Barnala DSP was also suspended.
Strike ends after Punjab Bandh
The bandh was called by Valmiki Samaj in protest against lathi charge in Punjab. The maximum impact of this bandh was seen in Jalandhar, where many markets remained closed and bus services were also affected.
However, after the government assured action on their demands, the sanitation workers’ unions announced the end of the strike. Minister Harjot Bains also appealed to other unions to end the strike and return to work so that people do not face any difficulty during the monsoon.
