IVF Myths: 7 big myths related to IVF, expert told what is the truth

July 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Today, with the help of IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), millions of couples across the world have fulfilled their dream of becoming parents. Despite this, there are many misconceptions and rumors regarding this IVF treatment. Some people consider it the last option, while others are confused about its success and safety. Due to lack of correct information, many couples delay starting the treatment. People believe that children born through IVF are not as normal as others? Is this true or just a myth?

Is this treatment very expensive? People remain confused about this because of such questions. TV9 had a special conversation with Dr. Swati Trivedi (Senior Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynecology Apollo Spectra Hospital Kanpur) about many myths related to this. Let us tell you…

7 big myths related to IVF

Myth 1: Babies born through IVF are not normal

Truth: Children born through IVF are completely normal like other children. Their physical, mental and emotional development occurs normally. They can pursue studies, sports and life like other children everywhere. The development of the child depends on how good nutrition, care and positive environment he gets.

Myth 2: IVF is just a cure for women’s problems

Truth: This assumption is not correct. Difficulties in conceiving are not only caused by women, but in many cases, problems related to men can also be responsible. Low sperm count or quality in men can also cause infertility. Therefore, before starting IVF, both husband and wife are examined and the treatment decision is taken on the basis of the medical reports of both.

Myth 3: IVF is successful the first time

Truth: The circumstances of successful IVF may be different from person to person. It depends on the age of the woman, quality of the egg, condition of the man’s sperm, hormones and other health reasons. Some couples achieve success on the first try, while others may need more than one IVF cycle.

Myth 4: IVF is only for older women

Truth: IVF is not just for older women. If a couple is having trouble conceiving a pregnancy even after trying for a long time or the woman has problems like fallopian tube block, endometriosis, PCOS or the man has sperm related problems, then the doctor may recommend IVF. However, the chances of success of IVF are generally higher at a younger age, so it is better to seek expert advice in time if needed.

Myth 5: IVF always results in twins

Truth: This is an old thinking. Earlier, many times more than one embryo was transferred, which increased the possibility of twins. But now with modern technology, doctors give priority to transfer a healthy embryo as per the need. This increases the chances of a healthy pregnancy and reduces the risk of twins. Therefore IVF does not always mean having twins.

Myth 6: You have to rest for nine months after IVF

Truth: Some time rest may be advised after IVF, but there is no need to stay in bed for the entire nine months. As per the doctor’s advice, the woman can live a normal life and continue light activities. Taking excessive rest is not always considered necessary or beneficial.

Myth 7: You cannot conceive naturally after IVF

Truth: This assumption is not completely correct. Many couples conceive naturally in the years following IVF. It depends on what was causing the difficulty in conceiving in the beginning, the fertility of the man and woman and how much the condition of the body has improved after treatment. Undergoing IVF does not mean that the possibility of natural pregnancy in the future is completely eliminated.
