Indian Railways is going to write a new history, Indian Railways has started the first hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. Made with indigenous technology, this train is quite special in terms of technology. What makes this train most special is that this train runs neither on diesel nor on electricity, rather this train runs on the track with advanced Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology.
Indian with this train Railway Moving into a new era of clean and sustainable transportation. Hydrogen fuel cell technology has emerged as an alternative to fossil fuel-based traction systems across the world. Hydrogen fuel cell technology will play a big role in converting hydrogen into electricity through chemical reaction.
Primary Energy Source: Its primary energy source is PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell). This is a fuel cell that generates electricity from the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen on the PFSA (Proton Conducting Perfluorosulfonic Acid) polymer membrane.
Water vapor not smoke: This process produces only water steam and heat as byproducts. Hydrogen is a high-energy fuel, its maintenance is low and its carbon footprint can be managed.
Train speed and passenger capacity
The design speed of this hydrogen train is 110 kmph but it has been approved to run at a maximum speed of 75 kmph. The passenger seating capacity of the train is 2600. The country’s largest railway hydrogen storage and refueling facility has been built in Jind, Haryana. This facility stores approximately 3000 kg of hydrogen at a time. Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) has granted the necessary license. The license includes storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas at the site.
