The Karnataka High Court has made some strong observations about the crime and punishment while denying bail to a 23-year-old rape accused. The court said that criminals are not dealt with strictly under the law and because of this it has become easy to commit crimes. The court commented, “The fear of law has gone. Because we do not deal with criminals strictly, as is the case in Middle-Eastern countries. That is why it has become so easy to commit crimes.” The court said, “If someone’s hand or leg is cut off, then perhaps people will understand the importance of following the law. Because we have a democracy, everyone takes it lightly.”
These comments were made by Justice R. Nataraj while hearing the bail plea of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) Manipal student Gopi Reddy Karthik Reddy. Gopi Reddy is in judicial custody since April 5 in a rape case. During the hearing, Justice Nataraj expressed concern that the tendency of people to commit crimes is increasing because they have no fear of its consequences.
On which matter did the court comment?
The court was hearing the bail plea filed by Reddy, who has been in jail for almost two months. While denying bail at this stage, Justice Nataraj made this comment. The judge further said, “If you have eaten salt, you will also have to drink water. Let him stay in jail for four-five more days. Let him get used to jail. Who knows, if you are sentenced, you may have to go back to jail.” However, the court later issued a notice to the state on the bail plea and directed that the matter be listed on June 8 for further consideration.
Criminal acts are now becoming common and frequent – Judge
The judge commented that criminal acts now appear to be common and recurring, as criminals feel that the system is ineffective. He said, “The teeth of the law have broken because we do not deal strictly with criminals. That is why it has become so easy to commit crimes, which is not the case in the Middle East. If someone’s hand or leg is cut off, then perhaps people will understand to follow the law. Because we have a democracy, everyone takes it (lightly).”
