Union Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting on demographic change on Saturday. During this, Home Minister Amit Shah gave necessary instructions to the officials. According to a statement issued after the meeting, the committee will study the changes in the population structure in the border districts. Amit Shah directed the officials to assess the displacement caused by illegal migration and other unnatural reasons, for this the committee will have to visit border areas, big cities and industrial towns.
Home Minister Amit Shah has taken this step in view of the infiltration taking place in various parts of the country and the resulting demographic changes. The Home Minister directed the officials to immediately provide all necessary administrative and logistical support for the smooth functioning of the committee. It was revealed in the meeting that the problem of demographic change is no longer limited to just the border districts. Its effects are clearly visible even in the big metros and major industrial cities of the country. Shah has taken a ground-breaking decision regarding this.
Committee formed after PM’s announcement
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the formation of this committee on August 15 last year, after which it was formally constituted on May 26 this year under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Justice Prabhakar Naolekar. The chairman of this committee is retired Supreme Court Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar. Its members include Census Commissioner, retired IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, former IPS officer Balaji Srivastava and Dr. Shamika Ravi. Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I) of the Ministry of Home Affairs works as the Member Secretary of this committee.
Report will have to be submitted to the government within a year
Announcing the formation of the committee in May 2026, Shah had described the issue as serious. He had said that this is a matter related to the sovereignty and national security of the country, and it is also related to law and order, change in social structure and protection of tribal society. The committee will have to submit its report to the Central Government within one year. In special circumstances it can be extended for 6 months.
Home Minister Amit Shah has given clear instructions that abnormal population change is a very sensitive subject related to the country’s sovereignty, national security, law and order, social fabric and protection of tribal communities, which requires in-depth study.
