Farmers from Punjab and Haryana are marching to Delhi for the Mahapanchayat today on 21st July. But before that, Haryana Police has completely sealed the Shambhu border and barricades have been put up, so that the farmers cannot reach Delhi, because the youth are already protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
Although some farmers reached the Shambhu border to see the police preparations and said that they wanted to go to Delhi peacefully from Punjab just to attend the one-day Mahapanchayat, but the Haryana Police has sealed the border as if farmers from some other country were going to Delhi.
Why has the Mahapanchayat been called?
Farmers are mainly protesting against the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and America. Farmer leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher and Gurnam Singh Chaduni said that if American agricultural, dairy and poultry products come to the Indian markets under this agreement, Indian farmers will suffer huge losses. The income of small farmers and laborers will decrease due to cheap foreign products. This Mahapanchayat has been called regarding this issue.
It has been claimed that about 550 farmer organizations and social forums from across the country will participate in this Kisan Mahapanchayat. Farmers from many states including Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have traveled to Delhi. In Haryana, along with farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni, many other big farmer leaders have been placed under house arrest. Farmers of Haryana had announced to march to Delhi at 5 am.
What did the farmers say?
The farmers said that they do not want to hold an indefinite protest in Delhi, there is only a one-day Mahapanchayat and after this Mahapanchayat they had to return, but despite this, the Haryana Police sealed the National Highway to stop them from going further, due to which the public is also facing a lot of trouble.
After the sudden closure of Shambhu Border by the Haryana Police in the early morning, all the vehicles coming from Punjab to Delhi via Haryana are facing a lot of trouble. Big trucks are stuck on the flyover near Shambhu border, which are being sent back by Punjab Police by making a U-turn from the Punjab border.
Truck drivers said that they are facing a lot of trouble due to this. Even before this, one and a half years ago, a similar situation had arisen due to the farmers on the Shambhu border, even then he was very upset. A police officer present at the spot said that Haryana Police has sealed the border, due to which the vehicles are being sent back.
