If someone tells you that a case can be won in court with the help of an AI chatbot, then perhaps the first reaction would be that this is an exaggeration, but the story of a firefighter living in Britain challenges this thinking. Here the guy took the help of ChatGPT instead of expensive lawyers, represented himself in the court and ultimately got his lakhs of rupees back. This surprising case is of 40-year-old Craig Titchener, a resident of Britain, who works as a firefighter at Heathrow Airport. A few years ago, his luck favored him so much that he won a jackpot of about Rs 2.58 crore in a scratchcard lottery.
This sudden huge amount of money changed his life, but later this money also became the cause of a long legal dispute for him. In the year 2022, Craig gave about Rs 52 lakh to his girlfriend Heather Douglas. Heather is a psychiatric nurse by profession and had good knowledge of investment and financial matters. There was an agreement between the two that premium bonds would be purchased with this amount and the future profits would be divided equally by both. At that time, their relationship was good, so Craig had no doubts about this decision, but with time their relationship broke down.

After the breakup, when Craig asked for the money he had given back, the matter changed completely. Heather flatly refused to return the money. He said that this amount was given to him as a gift, hence no question of returning it arises. This situation was very difficult for Craig. He tried to get legal advice and contacted many lawyers, but when he came to know that the fee for fighting the case would be so high that it would become too heavy for him, his courage started breaking. There came a time when he thought that perhaps it was not possible to get the money back. During this time the idea of using ChatGPT came to his mind. He shared his entire situation with the AI tool and tried to understand the legal process.
After this, ChatGPT explained to them in simple language how the court process proceeds, which documents are required, which forms have to be filled and how one can present one’s case in the court without a lawyer. However, he also admitted that AI did not advise him like a legal representative, but made things easier for him.
Based on this information, he decided to represent himself in the court. This step was not easy, because presenting one’s side in court without a lawyer is considered risky. Still he did not lose courage. Craig later said that he had little left to lose. If they didn’t even try, there was no hope of getting the money back. Therefore, he presented his side in the court with full preparation.
The case was heard in Central London County Court. In court, Heather Douglas claimed that Craig had happily given her this amount as a gift. She also alleged that Craig’s behavior during the relationship was controlling and harassing, but the court examined these claims in depth during the hearing. District Judge Charlotte Hart found that Heather could not present sufficient evidence to support her claims.
She could not prove that this money was really a gift. Not only this, he also did not submit important documents like his bank statements in the court. After considering all the facts and evidence, the court ruled in Craig’s favor and ordered Heather to return Rs 52 lakh. After this decision, Craig heaved a sigh of relief. He says that if he had given up or had not tried to understand the process with the help of AI, he might never have won this case.
