Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court. He has alleged that false posts and deepfake videos are being spread against him regarding the policy of E20 ethanol petrol, which is defaming him. According to Bar & Bench report, Gadkari has sought permission to file a civil case against Meta, X (Twitter), Google and other companies. The court has accepted his demand.
He has alleged that some content on social media is linking him and his family to E20 profits, while the policy is being run by the Petroleum Ministry. His petition alleges that some social media posts are falsely claiming that he was responsible for this programme. Besides, he and his family have benefited financially from this. These claims have caused serious and irreparable damage to his reputation.
Used AI manipulated audio visuals
The petition states, “These allegations are false, ill-conceived and highly defamatory, without the slightest trace of truth.” He has also alleged that AI-manipulated audio-visuals that mimic his face and voice have been used without his consent.
E20 controversy and Gadkari’s defense
This development has come amid criticism of the E20 policy, which has a provision to mix 20% ethanol in petrol to stop fuel import and reduce emissions from vehicles. However, many vehicle owners have expressed concern about its use. Especially in vehicle models made before 2023.
However, Gadkari has always supported the ethanol-blending program. Earlier this month, he had also given a big challenge to the critics, in which he had asked them to name even one car which had problems due to fuel. He had said, there is no case of any car facing problems due to E20 petrol. Is there any car in the country which has faced problems due to the use of E20 petrol? Name just one.
