
Assam government has taken major action against illegal Bangladeshis in the last two years. More than 1600 illegal immigrants have been sent back to Bangladesh from Assam. This information was given by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He told the Assembly on Monday that in the last two years, 1679 illegal Bangladeshis have been sent back to Bangladesh from Assam. Sarma gave this information in response to a question by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Badruddin Ajmal.
The Chief Minister said that the process of sending back illegal immigrants would continue between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025. However, he did not give much information about this. He had earlier said that illegal immigrants from neighboring countries were being sent back under the Immigration Act 1950. CM Sarma said that Assam government is fully following the instructions of the Centre. The state has also fully protected the human rights of illegal immigrants. He also said that those whose appeal is still pending in the court have not been sent back.
A total of 91,385 D-voters in the voter list of Assam
In response to a question by Congress MLA Noorul Islam, the Chief Minister said that there are a total of 91,385 D-voters (voters with doubtful citizenship) in the voter list of Assam. The highest number of these is in Sonitpur district, where there are 13,719 D-voters. At the same time, Barpeta district is at second place, where there are 8081 D-voters. CM Sarma said that on the instructions of the Election Commission, the process of separating regular voters and non-voters (D-voters) has been going on in the state since 1997.
The Chief Minister further said that the Foreigners Tribunal has declared 56,728 D-voters as foreigners. FT has declared 65,171 D-voters as Indian citizens. Gauhati High Court and Supreme Court have considered 42 people as citizens, 831 people who had appealed were declared illegal (foreigners) by the court. He also told that when this process started in the year 1997, 1,99,596 D-voters were found. Since then, 31,389 of these people have been declared foreigners and deported from the country.
