Delhi court convicted former Aam Aadmi Party councilor Tahir Hussain in the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma in the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. After this decision, Tahir Hussain said that he did not get justice. Hussain, who was present in the court, cried after hearing the judge’s decision and when he came out of the court, he said that justice had not been done. Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh also convicted Hussain of promoting enmity between different religious groups and rioting, but did not find enough evidence to prove the charge of criminal conspiracy. Four other people arrested in this case were also convicted, although not all were found guilty of murder.
At the time of the incident, Hussain was a councilor of the Aam Aadmi Party, but after his name came up in the case, the party suspended him. Apart from Tahir Hussain, the court also convicted Nazim, Qasim, Javed and Anas, although all were found not guilty on murder charges. The court acquitted 6 accused.
Ankit’s family left Delhi and started living in UP
The victim’s brother said that this verdict has reminded the family of the terrible moment when they first came to know about Ankit Sharma’s death. He said, “There is sadness, anger and a void that can never be filled. We have lost the strong support of our family and no decision can bring them back.”
Family members said that their lives changed completely after the violence and they decided to leave Delhi within a few months of the incident. He said, “We moved out of Delhi just two-three months after the incident. After what happened, we never felt safe living there. Now we live in a rented house in Uttar Pradesh. Our life has completely changed. The feeling of fear is always with us.”
