1 in 2 Indians is a victim of sleep problem, how much is India getting sick due to lack of sleep?

July 15, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Using mobile phones till late at night, increasing work pressure, stress and irregular daily routine are no longer just habits of people but have also started taking a toll on their health. Sometimes due to office work, sometimes social media and sometimes watching OTT till late night, people’s sleep is continuously decreasing. Its effect is no longer limited to morning fatigue only, but is visible on both body and mind. This is why doctors and health experts are continuously saying that good sleep is as important as a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Now a new research has also put forward this concern with figures. According to research, one out of every two people in India (51.4%) is facing some kind of sleep related problem. The most surprising thing is that most Indians are able to sleep only 5.77 hours on an average, whereas experts have advised 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily for adults. Research also found that people take an average of 28 minutes to sleep and the quality of their sleep is also less than normal. This means that many people go to bed on time, but are not able to get deep and peaceful sleep.

Many diseases may occur

Research has also shown that lack of sleep for a long time gradually affects the entire body. This can increase the risk of problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart diseases, stress, depression, weak immunity and weak memory. Due to not getting enough sleep, the body does not get time to repair itself and the mind does not get time to rest. This is the reason why continuous lack of sleep can become the beginning of many serious diseases.

Big health alert on sleep

If we look at the report of Pulmonologist and International Sleep Specialist Dr. Nalini Nagalla, she had conducted a survey on 500 IT employees of Hyderabad. In which they found that 97% people use mobile or other electronic gadgets for at least an hour before sleeping, 62% people have difficulty in falling asleep or maintaining sleep, 38% people remain troubled with fatigue, lack of attention or bad mood throughout the day, while 22% people have symptoms of sleep apnea.

What to do, what not to do?

In today’s time, use of mobile and laptop till late night, increasing screen time, work pressure, stress and irregular lifestyle have become the biggest enemies of people’s sleep. In such a situation, sleeping and waking up at a fixed time every day, staying away from screens before sleeping, consuming less caffeine in the evening and developing a habit of sleeping in a calm environment can be very helpful. Good sleep is now considered to be the basis not only of rest but also of good health, better mental health and long life. Therefore, if sleep is continuously decreasing or sleep related problems persist for a long time, it is important to consult a doctor instead of ignoring it.
