Who fired the pellet guns? Who were the plainclothes beaters? Rahul Gandhi’s letter to Amit Shah on brutality with students

July 26, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding accountability for the “barbaric attack” on students protesting “peacefully” at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20. Questioning the “extremely shocking” use of “deadly pellet guns”, the Congress leader said a 19-year-old student was in great pain and “may have lost the vision in one eye because he was shot with a pellet gun”.

Rahul Gandhi, in a letter to Amit Shah, said, “The security forces deployed in Delhi are ultimately answerable to you, so I ask:

1. As Home Minister, did you approve the use of lethal force, including pellet guns, against students? If not, then who gave it?
2. The people seen beating students in plain clothes with sticks, are they policemen or volunteers? Who authorized their deployment?

‘This violence breaks every rule’

Rahul said that “it is the responsibility of the government to protect the protesters and resolve their grievances through talks.” “Peaceful protests are essential for any democracy. It is the responsibility of the government to protect the protesters and address their grievances through dialogue. This kind of barbaric violence breaks every rule and has outraged the nation. The youth and students who are the future of our country are demanding answers and accountability.”

Rahul Gandhi on Saturday criticized the government, saying that children protesting for their rights get “pellets” instead of “justice”. Rahul Gandhi shared a video on Instagram showing a young man who was allegedly beaten up by Delhi Police during protests against the paper leak on Monday. The post read, “Sahil was standing with the tricolor in his hand and was just asking for a clean, fair examination and the fruits of his hard work. The police raised their gun and fired pellets, injuring him badly.
