The towel with which players wipe sweat at Wimbledon is made in this city of Gujarat!

July 14, 2026 by Uma Shankar

When legends like Novak Djokovic or Naomi Osaka wipe their sweat in Wimbledon, the most prestigious grass court tennis tournament, the eyes of the whole world are on them. However, along with these stars, the towel in their hands also attracts a lot of attention. This is not an ordinary towel, but an iconic product that has become the identity of Wimbledon. Players like these towels so much that after the match is over, they like to take them home with them as souvenirs. The most interesting thing is that these special towels, famous all over the world, have a direct connection with India. These premium towels used on the Wimbledon courts are manufactured in Vapi, Gujarat.

Journey starting from Britain to Gujarat

Christy’s has been in charge of making the official towels for Wimbledon since 1987. This is a very premium brand of home textile. Initially these towels were manufactured in Britain only. But about 15 years ago a big change took place. A leading textile company of India acquired this foreign brand. After this, gradually the entire production of towels was shifted from Britain to India. Today these luxurious towels are completely woven in the factory located in Vapi, Gujarat, which is a major achievement for the Indian manufacturing sector.

Preparation starts one and a half year in advance

Making these special towels is not a simple task. A very precise designing process works behind this. Planning for these towels starts 18 months before the start of the Wimbledon tournament. The design team closely studies the color trends of the future. It takes a week for each towel to be completely ready. During this, work from designing to manufacturing is done in coordination so that there is no compromise in quality.

There is a special rule hidden behind colors

The colors of Wimbledon towels are not chosen just like that, but there is a fixed rule behind it. The color of the towels used for male players is always based on the classic Wimbledon theme. It is kept dark green, purple and golden in color every year. At the same time, the color theme of the towels of women players is changed every year. Under the new pattern, red and white colored towels have been designed for the women players in the 2026 tournament.

No matter how many times you wash it, the newness does not go away.

These Christie brand towels are known for their special ‘short-loop terry weave’ technology. Due to this technology, they are extremely soft, absorb sweat quickly and also dry quickly. Premium quality cotton threads are used in making them, due to which their strength remains. No matter how many times you wash them, their newness does not go away. This is the reason why their demand is not limited to tennis courts only. People like them equally for beaches, swimming pools or their bathrooms.
