The Supreme Court has taken many important decisions to reduce the burden of pending cases and make the judicial process faster and systematic. In the full court meeting held on July 15, 2026, it was decided that a special Lok Adalat would be organized under the ‘Samdhaan Samaroh’ on August 21, 22 and 23, in which all the judges of the Supreme Court would participate. Along with this, the court has decided to list about 100 such cases (bunch matters) for hearing on priority basis, with the disposal of which about 9,177 cases can be resolved together. These cases will be placed before the respective benches out of the normal order, so that the cases pending for years can be disposed of quickly and the process of getting justice can be expedited.
The Full Court also made it clear that after disposal of these bunch cases, priority will be given to hearing the oldest pending cases. The hearing of the oldest cases pending since the issue of notice will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday every week. Apart from this, the court has also decided to make the list of cases i.e. cause list more simple and systematic. For this, a committee of Supreme Court judges will be formed, which will give suggestions to improve the system. The court believes that with this the cases will be heard in a more transparent and smooth manner.
Time limit will be fixed for debate
The Full Court has also decided to implement a new system for the final hearing cases. Now the lawyers arguing in such cases will have to inform in advance how much time they need to present oral arguments. With this, the hearing will not take unnecessarily long and the court will be able to manage its time better. The Supreme Court has been emphasizing on time-bound hearing in the past too and this decision is being considered as another important step in that direction.
Party-in-person gets new facility
Keeping in mind the convenience of the common people, an important decision was also taken in the meeting. Under the Supreme Court Rules, 2013, parties who contest their cases in person (party-in-person) will now have the option to appear before the Registrar through virtual medium. However, if any party wishes to appear in person, he will be allowed to do so, but there will be neither live-streaming nor video recording of such proceedings. These decisions of the Supreme Court are being considered an important initiative towards reducing the number of pending cases, making the judicial process more effective and better use of technology. This has increased the hope of quick disposal of thousands of cases.
