South Korea Market Crash: As shiny as the world of the stock market looks, it can be equally cruel in reality. Within just a month, South Korea’s stock market has shown this bitter truth to investors. Investors who were celebrating bumper profits till a few weeks ago are now shedding tears after seeing their ruined portfolios.
Within the last 30 days, South Korea’s main stock index ‘Kospi’ has fallen by 34 percent. This huge fall has not only broken the back of the market there, but has also destroyed the life savings of common people in a moment.
Record rise came on the strength of two companies
If we talk about the last one year south korea stock market Had surprised people all over the world by giving the highest returns. Even after this severe fall, Kospi’s one year return remains 71 percent. This historic boom in the market was mainly due to two big chip making companies, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.
Foreign investors poured so much money into these companies that their shares became rockets. In one year, shares of SK Hynix rose by 400 percent and shares of Samsung rose by 185 percent. Only these two companies have about 60 percent dominance in the Kospi index. Due to which the entire index had gone up.
Now these same shares ruined the investors
There is a simple saying in the market that the faster it goes up, the faster it comes down. The same two companies which had taken the stock market to the sky, are now taking it to the underworld. In just one month, the shares of SK Hynix have fallen by more than 50 percent. At the same time, shares of Samsung Electronics have also fallen by 38 percent. This crash in the shares of big companies has broken the back of those small investors who, seeing the fast pace of the market, had invested their entire hard-earned money in shares.
Profit of crores, then loss of crores
A user on Threads told how his luck suddenly changed. Earlier it had made a profit of more than 600 million Korean Won (about Rs 4 crore), but within a few days the tables turned such that it suffered a huge loss of 700 million Won (about Rs 4.6 crore). At the same time, another investor told that he had invested all the money saved for his marriage in the stock market, and now 40% of his savings have completely disappeared before his eyes.
I lost money on my dream house
Anyone can cry after reading the story of a user named ‘fintechgirl’ on X (formerly Twitter). He said that through 15 years of hard work, his family had accumulated about 600 million won. By giving some of this money, he had booked a small apartment for himself.
He had 500 million won left to pay the next installment. Seeing others making big money from Samsung shares, he also got greedy and invested that money in the market. Initially, she made so much profit that she bought a new iPhone 17 for both her daughters and an expensive luxury bag for her husband. But soon the market turned and more than half of her money (about Rs 2 crore) was lost.
Now they do not have money to pay the next installment of the house and are not able to get a loan from anywhere. The woman wrote, “I spent 300 million won of my hard-earned money to pay for my house. I feel like dying.”
Translation:
I blew away 300 million KRW ($300,000) of hard-earned money meant for my apartment installment payment. I feel like dying.
At first, seeing everyone else make money off Samsung Electronics made me feel like I was the only fool left out, and every single day was pic.twitter.com/yoQJAbWHt1– fintechgirl

Two-thirds of my property went up in smoke
Another investor named ‘Jack & Jong’ while narrating his story described it as the biggest financial shock of his life. He wrote, “Two-thirds of my total wealth, which included my profits, my years of savings and even the money taken on loan, all went up in smoke.”
One small mistake and sleepless nights
A user named ‘OxLeaf’ said that he lost about 60 million won (about Rs 4 lakh) in just one month. Despite years of trading experience, he did not set a ‘stop-loss’, which proved to be his biggest mistake. He has sold off his remaining fixed assets and repaid the loan to his friends, but this shock has shaken him from within. He wrote, “I have not slept a single night properly for a month. However, now it is all over and I am free. I just don’t know how long it will take for me to come out of this shock.”
How did all this happen suddenly?
In fact, between January and June this year, South Korea’s stock market (KOSPI) had risen by 116%. There was so much noise in the market about AI (Artificial Intelligence) and semiconductor companies that people started investing money blindly. On June 19, the index had even crossed the 9,000 mark. But by the end of June, investors understood that this indiscriminate bullishness in the name of AI would not last long. After this, there was such a severe selloff in technology shares that the market fell flat. This incident in South Korea is a big lesson for every investor that one should never risk all their savings in the market at once.
