Situation worsened due to floods in Assam, 68 deaths so far; 5.24 lakh people still affected in 5 districts

The havoc of floods is at its peak in Assam. The death toll due to floods increased to 68. According to the official bulletin, more than 5.24 million people in five districts are still affected by the floods. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that more than 5,24,700 people have been affected in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts. In a bulletin issued late on Sunday night, it was said that in the last 24 hours, two people drowned in flood waters in Charaideo district, increasing the total number of deaths.

Here Charaideo is most affected, about 1.9 lakh people are affected. More than 1.5 lakh people are affected in Sivasagar, while around 1.4 lakh people are affected in Jorhat. The situation is improving compared to Saturday. When about 6.55 million people were affected in 6 districts. According to ASDMA, officials are running 354 relief camps and relief distribution centers in four districts, where 37,724 homeless people are being provided shelter.

763 villages are affected by floods

The bulletin said that the Army, NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services and Police have conducted rescue operations in different parts of Upper Assam. Currently, flood waters have submerged 763 villages across the state, while more than 48,742.09 hectares of agricultural land has been damaged. ASDMA said that embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure have also been damaged in many districts. It is further stated that Dhansiri river in Numaligarh is still flowing above the danger mark. The bulletin said that the massive floods have affected 88,240 pet animals and poultry across Assam.

According to the Chief Minister, the Indian Air Force has so far flown 29 flights and air-dropped more than 4,100 relief packages to the stranded communities. Rescue and relief operations are underway with 250 NDRF personnel, who are being supported by 36 NDRF boats, 65 SDRF and Fire and Emergency Services boats, three Indian Army boats and 82 indigenous boats brought from Majuli and surrounding areas.
