July 30, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Sawan Shiv Puja: The month of Saavan has special significance in Sanatan Dharma. Every day in this holy month, lakhs of devotees seek the blessings of Mahadev by offering water on Shivalinga. According to religious beliefs, offering water to Shivalinga brings peace to the mind and eliminates life’s problems. However, it is very important to follow the right rules and timing while offering water. Offering water in the wrong way or at the wrong time does not make the puja complete, therefore, before offering water, it is very important to know the main things related to it.

auspicious time to offer water

Morning is considered to be the best time to offer water to Lord Shiva in Sawan. The time from Brahma Muhurta to 10 am is the most auspicious time for offering water. At this time there is purity and peace in the environment. Apart from this, offering water in the evening during Pradosh period is also considered very fruitful. Pradosh Kaal i.e. the time 45 minutes before sunset and 45 minutes after sunset is best for Shiva worship. By offering water at these scheduled times, Mahadev fulfills every wish of his devotees.

standing direction and character

It is very important to keep in mind your direction while offering water to Shivling. Always stand in the south direction and offer water while facing north. North direction is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Even by mistake, do not offer water while standing in the east or north direction. It is best to use copper, brass or silver utensils to offer water. Keep one thing in mind that never offer milk by pouring it in a copper vessel. Although pure water should be offered from a copper vessel, if you do not have a copper vessel then you can also use silver or yellow metal.

Correct method and rules for offering water

While offering water, its stream should remain thin and continuous.

First of all, offer water on the right side of Jaladhari which is the place of Shri Ganesh.

After this, offer water on the left side which is the place of Shri Kartikeya.

Then offer water on the middle stream which is the place of Mata Ashok Sundari.

After this, offer water on the round circle of Jaladhari which is the lotus hand of Goddess Parvati.

Finally, offer water slowly on the main Shivalinga.

Apply the remaining water on the flowing area and during this continuously keep chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivay”.
