
Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on fast for 20 days at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital by the police today (July 18). His health was continuously deteriorating due to the fast. At present he is being examined in the hospital. Meanwhile, a letter petition has been sent to the Supreme Court in Wangchuk’s case.
In this petition, the Supreme Court has been demanded that appropriate directions should be issued to protect the fundamental rights of Sonam Wangchuk and all other peaceful protesters which come under Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India. It has been said in the petition that the Supreme Court should direct the Delhi Police and its officers to allow peaceful protests and hunger strikes at Jantar Mantar.
Demand for providing medical facilities
It has been said in the petition that the Supreme Court should direct the police officers to provide adequate medical facilities at the protest site. It was said in the petition that as per the order of Delhi High Court, instructions should be given to provide qualified doctors, emergency medical equipment and medicines. So that Sonam Wangchuk and any other participant of the hunger strike can be medically examined from time to time. Along with this, the petition also demanded that the Supreme Court should direct the Delhi Police and all concerned officials not to interfere in the peaceful protests and not to use unnecessary and excessive force.
Demand to issue proper instructions for release
Apart from this, it has also been said that if Sonam Wangchuk is found in illegal custody, then issue appropriate instructions for her release as per law. Also direct the police officers to facilitate Wangchuk’s immediate return to the designated protest site, so that the peaceful protest can continue in accordance with the law and under his leadership.
Sonam Wangchuk admitted to hospital
Delhi Police removed Sonam Wangchuk, who was fasting for 20 days, in a well-planned operation early in the morning. Policemen in plain clothes reached the protest site and took Wangchuk to the hospital. This action was taken in the morning when there was less crowd at the spot. Delhi Police says that the entire action was taken peacefully and with restraint. At the same time, the police also appealed to the protesters to vacate Jantar Mantar as soon as possible.
