Educationist Sonam Wangchuk is on hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Today is the 18th day of this strike. A public interest litigation has been filed in the Delhi High Court in this matter. It has been demanded that activist Sonam Wangchuk should be given immediate medical help. Wangchuk is protesting against the irregularities in the education system. This PIL has been filed by activist and lawyer Rakesh Kumar Saini.
The PIL demands that the court direct the Center and Delhi government to take Wangchuk to the hospital and forcibly feed him. According to the petition, Wangchuk’s health has deteriorated rapidly. His weight has reduced by 8.5 kg and if he continues his hunger strike, he may die in two days. It has been said in the petition that if he dies, it will be a matter of great shame for the country and the world.
‘He is behaving like a hardcore criminal’
It has been alleged in the PIL that the government is treating Wangchuk like a hardcore criminal, terrorist or a traitor to the country and is not concerned about him at all. It has been said in the petition that the least the government can do is to provide him proper medical help to save his life, even if it has to be done forcefully.
According to the petition, “The easiest thing to do is to take them to a government hospital and force-feed them through liquid diet the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals which are essential for the survival of the human body.” The petitioner has said that while people have started alleging that the conscience of the country is dead, “the petitioner is confident that the conscience of the court is not dead”.
Wangchuk is on indefinite hunger strike
Wangchuk is on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28. He had started this strike when he had joined the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of the Education Minister. CJP started as an online funny movement, which gained immense popularity on social media platforms, especially among young users.
