Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that students have demanded accountability and reforms in the education system, but the Modi government has responded to their courage with cowardice and unnecessary cruelty. Sonia Gandhi alleged that instead of considering students as the future of the country, the government is treating them as enemies of the nation. Accusing the government of weakening India’s education system, he said that the students of the country have exposed the claims of the Modi government.
Sonia Gandhi said that it is a moral, political and constitutional responsibility to stand with the students and protect their future. In her article published in The Hindu newspaper titled Decline of the education system, the pain of young India, Sonia Gandhi said, the students’ agitation is the natural outcome of two interconnected reasons – first, the education system of today, which only creates disappointment among the youth and second, the same familiar arrogance of the Modi government and its persistent refusal to fix accountability or take constructive steps.
‘Government has been committing brutality against protesters before too’
Sonia alleged that the brutality committed against student protesters by policemen working under the direct jurisdiction of the Union Home Minister is nothing new for this government.
He said, we all remember well how armed police and paramilitary forces took action on university campuses during the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-National Register of Citizens (CAA-NRC) protests in 2020. The unacceptable atrocities committed against India’s women wrestlers can never be forgotten.
What message did PM Modi give late night?
In a recorded message released late on Thursday night, the Prime Minister said that the proposed law will have provisions for fast-track courts and strict punishment for the culprits. He said that after the approval of the Cabinet, the bill will be finalized and it will be presented in Parliament at the beginning of the second week of the monsoon session.
PM Modi said that the government has been working to address the concerns related to the alleged NEET paper leak for the last two and a half months. He said that by re-conducting the examination and declaring the results, the Center has ensured that an academic year of about 22 lakh students is not wasted.
