Main Wapis Aaunga Review: How complete is the love story wrapped in the pain of partition after 8 decades? How about Imtiaz Ali I will be back?

June 11, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Naseeruddin Shah Movie Main Wapis Aaunga Review: The feeling of patriotism is not dependent on any one day. This is a feeling that can arise in the heart at any time. For those who have seen Partition and lived that environment, life has been very different. There is no comparison to his sacrifices. No one can compensate for their loss. Partition has been one of the most unfortunate moments of the country which hurt every single person of India. The pain of separation from loved ones is great, but when you do not even know who got separated and where, when you have to spend your whole life without your loved ones despite knowing that the distance of meeting is just on the other side of the border wall, then just imagine how difficult it would be to live with that pain.

The film I will come back is the biography of a person suffering from such deep pain of partition, who remains desperate all his life to find his lost love and at the last stage of his life, he is able to climb some complete steps. The entire journey of the film is actually based on a man’s struggle to fulfill his unfulfilled love, in which his grandson (Diljit Dosanjh’s character) helps him.

The story of the film is of 95 year old Ishar Singh Grewal. He lives near Attari border but his heart is still stuck in Sargodha, Pakistan. For Ishtar, life before 1947 was like a fluent, fresh poem. Simple, beautiful and full of love. That period of youth is very fresh in Ishar Singh’s mind even after 8 decades. Even after so long of partition and being away from their birthplace, they are still living there and have no connection with the present times. Although he has a full family, his world is still in Sargodha where he left his love and family decades ago.

How will this incomplete story of love be completed?

The union of two souls is called love and when two bodies come together and become one soul, they are never separated. The love story of Ishar Singh Grewal and Jiya is also similar. When both of them fall in love, the country is going through the tragedy of conflict and partition with the British. Now love does not see age, caste or religion. In such a situation, love happens between people of two different religions. On one hand Ishtar is from a Sikh family and Jiya is from a Muslim family. But even the division of religion, caste or country cannot keep these two lovers apart.

Even though circumstances do not allow them to stay together for long, their love for each other never diminishes till the end of their lives and this liveliness makes this love story special. Ishtar’s family is already fed up with her insistence on getting her love back, but Ishtar’s grandchildren come as a ray of hope. Now, after 78 years, will Ishar Singh be able to meet his love whom he had left behind in Sargodha decades ago? To know this you will have to watch this film.

How is the acting?

Naseeruddin Shah has taken the entire limelight of this film from beginning to end. It would not be wrong to say that Naseer, who played the role of a 95 year old man at the age of 75, is the lead actor of this film. Everyone else has supported him. In the film, the character of his youth has been played by actor Vedang Raina and with his skilled acting, he has shown that he is a long-distance horse. On the other hand, Sharvari Wagh has also dominated in the role of his love interest.

Rajat Kapoor to Diljit Dosanjh have acted well in the film and seem to be living up to the expectations of the fans. But the way Naseeruddin Shah has molded himself into the character of Ishar Singh, one gets attracted to the whirlpool of his stagnation and becomes completely stable. The yearning and deep suffering of partition is visible in his character which tells the whole story of the cruel reality of that period.

How is the direction?

Whenever Bollywood demands good romantic films, Imtiaz Ali fulfills it with great satisfaction. We have seen many examples of this. Now his film I will be back is also a true love story with which every person will feel connected. This is an emotional love story and some scenes will make you cry. The music of the film and the conditions under which its songs have been used seem perfect and real. The songs have not been forced anywhere in the film but have been used as per relevance. Once you listen to these songs related to love and patriotism, you will definitely want to turn to this precious playlist again.

Talking about direction, since the film is on love, the romantic scenes in it appear more dominant and prominent, while the partition scenes are frightening. There is no gang war in the film, there is a fight which shook not only the country but also the entire world. There are variations in the soundtrack of the film and songs ranging from slow to fast tracks have been included. There are songs ranging from romantic to patriotic in which complete decency is visible which is missing in the songs of today’s masala films. But the songs of Imtiaz Ali’s films have always been people’s favorite and these songs are also according to the people’s choice.

I’ll come back and see or not?

Every Indian should watch this film. So that we remember that our earlier generations did not get independence just like that. How many houses were destroyed even before we got the freedom that we celebrate today. How many people like Ishar Singh kept yearning for their love all their life. Many families got separated and could not find their place anywhere. Apart from demonstrations and sloganeering, people witnessed a massacre whose pain is still visible on the chest of Indian soil and which can never be compensated at any cost. What will remain will be only regrets and some questions which will always echo in the mind of every person who will look back at this page of history.
