Government strict on NEET paper leak but questions on result also, Bombay High Court asks for original answer sheet on appeal of 3 students

July 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Bombay High Court has issued notice to the Central Government and NTA on the petitions of three students complaining about irregularities in marks in the results of NEET-UG examination. This petition was filed on behalf of three NEET-UG candidates Richa Deshpande, Soham Gavate and Atharva Jagtap. The students alleged that in the results declared on July 16, they were given much less marks than the marks calculated on the basis of their OMR sheets and answer keys. Richa Deshpande has claimed that after seeing the OMR sheet, she had estimated 619 marks, but the OMR sheet later emailed by NTA showed only 280 marks.

These marks were much lower than the predicted score calculated after seeing the OMR sheet. In this case, the court directed NTA to present the original answer key by July 30. Also, the case has been kept in urgent category. On the next hearing, NTA will also have to present the answer sheets of the petitioners.

What did the petitioner tell in the court?

Richa Deshpande told the court that my entire record is clean. I was preparing for NEET honestly from the beginning. Due to the irregularities in the examination, I had to face a lot of mental, emotional and physical stress, yet I am firm on my desire to become a doctor and serve in the medical field.

He said that my case is very strong because I have evidence. Clear irregularities are visible in the OMR sheet. If the court asks NTA to produce the original OMR sheets and documents, then NTA will not suffer any loss, but if my views are not listened to and counseling is done only on the basis of wrong result, then my entire year will be wasted. My future and dream of becoming a doctor will be in danger. Therefore, it is very important to follow justice, transparency and correct procedure.

According to Richa, while giving the exam, she had marked her answers in the question sheet and was allowed to keep that booklet with her. NTA had shown scanned images of OMR answer sheets and machine recorded answers on its website. He checked his OMR on the official portal of NTA and the answers marked by him were visible correctly in the displayed OMR.
