There are some leaders who, by staying away from controversies, make their stature so big within the organization and the government that they become the first choice for leadership in times of crisis. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on 25 July 2026 amid NEET-UG paper leak and protests across the country. Then the only name on which Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence is this name. Prahlad Venkatesh Joshi. Joshi has got additional charge of Education Ministry. He is already holding the responsibility of the ministries of New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Now he has the additional responsibility of dealing with the questions raised regarding the examination system in the Education Ministry and the challenges facing the government. Let us know Joshi’s political journey…

Journey from industrialist to politician
Prahlad Venkatesh Joshi was born on 27 November 1962 in Vijayapura (earlier Bijapur), Karnataka. His early education took place in Hubli. He received K.S. from Karnataka University, Dharwad. Earned Graduation (BA) degree from Arts College. Before entering the political arena, in his early days, Prahlad Joshi was an industrialist by profession. He, along with some of his friends, started a small industry named Vibhav Chemicals. He was also a member of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry based in Hubli.
Hubli’s Idgah ground and movement
Before joining politics, Joshi was an RSS worker. The biggest turning point of his political career came in the early 1990s. Between 1992 and 1994, there was a major movement to hoist the tricolor at the disputed Idgah ground (also known as Kittur Rani Chennamma Ground) in Hubli, Karnataka. Prahlad Joshi played a leading role in this movement led by RSS and BJP.
This movement made him famous overnight in Dharwad and surrounding areas. Supporters considered it a symbol of national pride, while critics alleged that it increased communal polarization in Karnataka. Recently, the Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the Karnataka High Court to hand back the ownership of this ground to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation. During this period, Joshi also led the ‘Save Kashmir Movement’, which further increased his political stature.

Invincible MP from Dharwad and skilled strategist of BJP
After the success of the Eidgah movement, he was given the command of Dharwad District President of BJP. Later he was also the General Secretary of Karnataka BJP and Karnataka State BJP President from 2013 to 2016.
His entry into electoral politics was in 2004 when he first contested from Dharwad Lok Sabha seat and defeated Congress’s B.S. Defeated Patil. After this, Dharwad seat became such an impenetrable fort of Prahlad Joshi which no one could penetrate. He was elected MP from here for five consecutive times in 2004, 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024. His popularity can be gauged from the fact that in 2009, when many senior ministers and MPs had to face defeat in Karnataka, Joshi had registered the second biggest victory in the state. In 2019, he won his seat by a huge margin of more than one lakh votes. He was also in the Speaker’s panel of the Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2018. In Prahlad Joshi’s decades-long career, there has been no allegation or court decision against him of corruption or abuse of office.

Minister in Modi cabinet twice
Prahlad Joshi, without being a minister in any state government, has traveled directly from the organizational structure of BJP to the top of the central government. Joshi has handled 6 major departments like Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, Mines, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy.

As Parliamentary Affairs Minister, he excellently coordinated the legislative work of the government in Parliament.

In 2024, he was assigned the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy. They are working on the vision of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy in the country by 2030 and ‘net-zero’ by 2070. Under his leadership, important initiatives like National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM-Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, PM-KUSUM Scheme and ‘Viability Gap Funding’ for offshore wind projects are being taken. One of their key strategies is to bid for 50 GW of renewable energy every year by 2027.
Why is Prahlad’s appointment important?
Prahlad Joshi has got the additional charge of the Education Ministry at a time when the education system is under question due to alleged irregularities in various examinations including NEET. There is a big challenge before the Central Government to restore the confidence of the students and improve the examination system. Joshi has held many important responsibilities in the organization and central government for a long time. Considering his administrative experience in ministries like Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, Mines and Renewable Energy, the government has entrusted him with this responsibility. Now it remains to be seen how he deals with the current challenges of the Education Ministry.
