Devendra Fadnavis achieved big position in Maharashtra politics, left Sharad Pawar behind

July 13, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has achieved a major achievement in the politics of the state. Till July 12, 2026, he has become the third longest serving Chief Minister of the state. In this matter, he has left behind the total tenure of Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar.

According to the data, till now Fadnavis has served as Chief Minister for a total of 6 years and 7 months i.e. 2,430 days in three different terms. Whereas Sharad Pawar was the Chief Minister four times and his total tenure was about 6 years 221 days i.e. 2,412 days.

Fadnavis’s third term continues

Sharad Pawar became the Chief Minister four times but could not complete the full tenure of five years even once. In contrast, Fadnavis has become Chief Minister thrice and in his first term (2014-2019) he completed the full five-year term. His second term lasted for six days and his third and current term is still going on, having completed 585 days till July 12.

CM with longest tenure

Vasantrao Naik holds the record of serving as Chief Minister for the longest period in the history of Maharashtra. He held the post of CM and led the state for 11 years 78 days i.e. a total of 4,096 days, while in second place is Vilasrao Deshmukh who worked as the Chief Minister for about 7 years 129 days i.e. 2,686 days. Now Devendra Fadnavis is in third place with 2,430 days and his current tenure is still continuing. If Fadnavis continues his current tenure, he may come closer to this record in the coming months.

Fadnavis’s political journey

Born on 22 July 1970 in a middle-class family of Nagpur, Devendra Fadnavis has done graduation in Law, post-graduation in Business Management and Diploma in Project Management. He started his political journey by becoming a councilor of Nagpur Municipal Corporation in 1992 and remained a councilor for two consecutive terms. After this he was elected MLA for five consecutive times. In 2014, at the age of just 44, he became the second youngest Chief Minister of the state after Sharad Pawar.

Important departments remained with Fadnavis

During the tenure of 2014-2019, Fadnavis held important departments like Home, General Administration, IT, Urban Development, Law and Justice, Ports and Public Relations. During this period, he started major projects like Mumbai Next, Police Digitization Project, Samriddhi Expressway and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Krishi Samman Yojana.

Fadnavis became Chief Minister for the third time

During the political crisis of 2019, Fadnavis took oath as Chief Minister for 5 days. In 2019, he had a tenure of 5 days after the alliance of Shiv Sena, Congress and the then undivided NCP. In the 2024 assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance registered a historic victory with 235 seats, in which the BJP got 132 seats and Fadnavis became the Chief Minister for the third time.
