Uproar continued for the 5th consecutive day on Friday demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the NEET-UG paper leak case, due to which the proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament have been adjourned till Monday. The protesting MPs continued to demand accountability, leading to further political deadlock in Parliament, while Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged them to allow the debate in the Lok Sabha.
House Making a statement in, Rijiju said that the government has repeatedly approached the opposition parties, including the Congress, to allow debate in Parliament. Rijiju said that not having a debate on NEET will send a wrong message to the country.
The ruling party insisted on debate
He said that since Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has assured the people that a law will be made on paper leaks and fast-track courts will be created to settle such cases, the opposition should not put conditions in advance.
He said that today he once again requested KC Venugopal repeatedly. When we all are of the opinion that there should be discussion on NEET. The Prime Minister himself has assured the entire country. Sonam Wangchuk has broken her hunger strike and demanded discussion. If we do not discuss, it will not send the right message to the country.”
Opposition adamant on Pradhan’s resignation
However, opposition members remained adamant on Pradhan’s resignation and raised slogans like “resign”, following which the proceedings were adjourned for the day.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said that there will be no discussion before Pradhan’s resignation, PM’s apology and action against those who committed cruelty against students.
Gandhi said, “(Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren) Rijiju made a statement in the Lok Sabha asking Congress MPs to initiate the discussion. Whenever someone’s name is taken, it is normal to ask that person to respond. However, when I stood up to respond to Rijiju, I was not allowed to speak and my mic was switched off.”
Parliament faces uproar for fifth day
He said, I wanted to clearly state the opposition’s stand. Students have three demands: Corrupt Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will have to go; Action should be taken against those who beat students; And the Prime Minister should apologize to the students.
Gandhi said, these are three conditions. We will not hold any talks or discussions before removing Pradhan. For the last five days, the House has been adjourned repeatedly due to opposition’s protests over the NEET paper leak issue.
