Polio occurred at the age of 2 years
Sharmila Dhankar was born in Chitrauli village of Haryana. She was second among her three sisters. His mother could not see. Father was a farmer but due to drought in the area, there was not much yield. When Sharmila Dhankar was just 2 years old, she was affected by polio in her left leg. The matter did not end here. This was just the beginning of his painful story.
Tired of domestic violence, thought of committing suicide
Sharmila Dhankar got married at the age of 18. But my husband and family met me in such a way that life became hell. She became a victim of dowry and domestic violence. Daily abuse and beatings became a part of life. While facing physical and mental torture, the situation became such that Sharmila Dhankar started thinking of killing herself. Ultimately she got divorced from her first husband.
Divorced from first husband, remarried at the age of 28
After divorce, Sharmila Dhankar not only had to think about herself, but also had to raise her two daughters. She did not want to be a burden on her parents. In such a situation, he did many small tasks. But, life took a turn when he married again at the age of 28.
Second husband changed her life, became a para athlete
Sharmila Dhankar’s second husband Ajit Singh advised her to make a career in para athletics. Following the advice of her second husband, Sharmila Dhankar decided to become a para athlete. In search of training, she reached Rao Tularam Stadium, where former para athlete Tekchand coached her. Sharmila Dhankar debuted in para athletics at the age of 34.
He made his Commonwealth debut 4 years ago in Birmingham. There she had missed the medal by finishing fourth. But he has created history by winning the gold medal in his second Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2026. She has become the first Indian to win a gold medal in the women’s Para Shot Put F57 event.
