Crude oil crosses $100, will petrol and diesel prices change today? Know the prices of many big cities including Delhi-Mumbai

July 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Due to the Iran-America war, crude oil prices in the international market have reached above $100 per barrel. This is the first time since May when oil prices are on fire. Meanwhile, in India too, oil companies have released new rates of petrol and diesel on 25 July 2026. It is a matter of relief that there has been no change in the prices of petrol and diesel. Like last several days, even today the oil companies have continued with the old rates. However, there is fluctuation in the prices of crude oil in the international market, which may affect the fuel prices in the coming days.

The biggest reason for this increase in oil prices is the tension related to Iran and increased concern about energy supply. Experts say that if the situation worsens or sea routes are affected, the worldwide oil supply may be affected. However, this price is still lower than the high of $ 120 per barrel reached in late April, when there was great concern in the global market regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The prices of petrol and diesel in India have remained stable since May 25. On that day, government oil companies had increased the price of petrol by ₹ 2.61 per liter and the price of diesel by ₹ 2.71 per liter. There has been no change in prices since then.

Petrol and diesel prices in big cities

If we talk about major cities, petrol is being sold at ₹ 102.12 per liter and diesel at ₹ 95.20 per liter in Delhi. Whereas in Mumbai petrol is ₹ 111.21 per liter and diesel is ₹ 97.83 per liter. Apart from this, even in big cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata, the price of petrol remains more than Rs 110 per liter. The price of diesel is less than Rs 100 in these cities, but in Hyderabad diesel remains at the level of ₹ 103.82 per liter.

City Petrol (Rs/per litre)
Diesel (Rs./Litre)
Delhi ₹102.12 ₹95.20
Mumbai ₹111.21 ₹97.83
Kolkata ₹113.51 ₹99.82
Bengaluru ₹110.89 ₹98.8
Chennai ₹108.01 ₹99.66
Gurugram ₹102.77 ₹95.44
Noida ₹101.92 ₹95.37

How is the price of petrol and diesel decided in India?

The prices of petrol and diesel in India depend on many major factors. The first and most important reason is the price of crude oil in the international market. If crude oil becomes expensive then there is a possibility of increase in the price of fuel in India also. The second big reason is the value of rupee against dollar. India buys most of its crude oil needs from abroad and it is paid in dollars. In such a situation, if the rupee weakens then importing oil becomes expensive, the effect of which can reach the common people.

Apart from this, taxes imposed by the central and state governments, the cost of transporting oil from one place to another and the demand-supply situation also play a big role in determining the price of petrol and diesel. This is the reason why the prices of petrol and diesel vary in different states and cities of India. Every state imposes VAT and other taxes accordingly, due to which the price changes.
