US President Donald Trump has presented a 28-point peace plan to end the long-running war between Ukraine and Russia. Now Ukrainian President Zelensky said on Saturday that a delegation led by Security Council Secretary Rustam Umerov is going to America, where negotiations will continue on an agreement to end the war with Russia.
Umerov has now been made the head of the Ukrainian delegation. Because the first chief negotiator — Zelensky’s powerful chief of staff Andriy Yermak — had resigned on Friday. Anti-corruption investigators had searched Yermak’s apartment just hours before his resignation. After this, Umerov will now lead this delegation.
Will the war end?
Zelensky said he expected the results of talks with the US in Geneva last week to be taken forward and finalized on Sunday. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will all meet with Ukrainian officials in Florida on Sunday, a senior US official told Reuters.
In the Geneva meetings, Ukraine got the opportunity to present its own separate proposal in response to the proposals given by America. These proposals were made in the U.S. about two weeks ago. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll gave it to the leaders of Kyiv.
Zelensky wrote on There is a lot of pressure from America on Ukraine to agree to some agreement, because Zelensky is currently in a very difficult situation both politically and militarily.
What happened in the Geneva meeting?
The Geneva meeting significantly modified the original 28-point plan, which was drafted by Steve Witkoff and Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Sovereign Assets Fund and the Kremlin’s special representative. Ukraine’s European allies said the original plan — which was considered too favorable to Russia — needed additional work.
Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov said last week that the Kremlin had received a new version of the plan. After hinting last week that Ukraine would have until Thursday to agree to a deal, Trump stopped short of imposing any deadline.
Zelensky said on Sunday that last week Russia used about 1,400 attack drones, 1,100 guided aerial bombs and 66 missiles.
Why did the Chief of Staff resign?
A $100 million energy sector corruption scandal has rocked Ukrainian politics. Due to this matter, two ministers and now the President’s most trusted person (Chief of Staff Andrey Yermak) had to leave their posts. Yermak told the New York Post just hours after his resignation that he was “now going to the frontlines.” He said, “I am an honest and good person.”
