Wherever there is water, flood like situation… Why is it raining heavily in the desert country UAE?

December 20, 2025 by Uma Shankar

There has been heavy rain in UAE this time. Besides, flood like situations have also emerged in the country. The roads appeared filled with water. Due to which people had to face a lot of trouble. Heavy rains worsened the situation so much that travel was disrupted and officials had to issue warnings to people to stay indoors. This heavy rain brought large parts of the country to a standstill. However, the question arises as to how heavy rains have started occurring in the desert areas. Due to this unusual rain, questions are being raised again as to why such heavy rains are happening so frequently in the Gulf region.

Heavy rain was seen in many areas of UAE. There was heavy rain in Dubai late on Thursday night, followed by heavy rain throughout the night in Abu Dhabi. By Friday morning, roads in many low-lying areas were flooded. After this, the officials asked people to stay in their homes and avoid unnecessary travel.

Heavy rain becomes difficult in UAE

Along with this, government employees in Dubai were instructed to work from home, while the private sector was also asked to do the same. Also beaches, parks and some tourist places were temporarily closed.

What kind of area is UAE?

United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a desert area. Due to this, there is generally very little rainfall here every year. Due to rainfall in the country, the structure of cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi has been built in such a way that the drainage system there is not ready to handle such a large amount of water. Because of this, sudden heavy rain (cloudburst) can quickly affect roads, tunnels and underpasses, creating flood-like situations.

Why are such situations happening in the Gulf area?

Many questions are being raised due to the sudden heavy rains in the Gulf area. Meteorologists have put forth the answers. Meteorologists are attributing the current conditions to unstable weather patterns associated with low-pressure systems spread over the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. These systems push moisture-laden air into the area, creating high, heavy rain clouds.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has warned that such conditions could bring storm, lightning, hail and strong winds, producing episodes of heavy rain across the country.

Impact of climate change?

Climate experts say that rising global temperatures are making weather more extreme around the world, even in dry areas like deserts. There may be more moisture in the hot air, which increases the chances of heavy rain. Its effect in Gulf countries has been such that rainfall is less throughout the year. But, whenever it happens, it rains heavily. Due to which flood like situations arise in a short time. Scientists say that as the climate continues to change, such intense rainy seasons will become more frequent.

Its impact is not limited to UAE only. In the neighboring country Qatar also, due to heavy rain, the FIFA Arab Cup match had to be canceled because lightning was seen near the stadium.
