The world is a fan of the stories of Indian cinema. It is liked a lot because of its songs, relationships, emotions, clothes, customs and values. Especially Hindi films, which were as popular in the former Soviet Union, are equally appreciated in the era of Vladimir Putin. The craze for Indian films extends from entire Asian and European countries to America. This is the reason why even today there is craze for Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth, Shahrukh Khan or Allu Arjun. In the past, the foundation of the cultural bridge laid by veteran artists like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar is being strengthened in its own way by today’s generation. This is why the President of Russia Vladimir Putin Likes Bollywood movies very much. He has also said this during the special function.
It is noteworthy that there has been a big change in the temperament of world cinema in the last few years. Especially after the Russia-Ukraine war and the tension between America and China, the subjects of films have changed and the treatment has also changed. War and nationalism have become favorite subjects of films across the world these days. Russia is also not untouched by this. Russia made it known this year through the films ‘August’ and ‘Putin’. These days, such films are also being made in Russia, in which Ukraine is being presented as a villain. Current Russian cinema tries to show that Ukraine is the most dangerous country in the world. At the same time, in Hollywood films, sympathy is shown not for Russia but for Ukraine. On the other hand, the conflict between Hollywood and Chinese cinema is well known.
Indian cinema away from global diplomacy
In such a situation, special love for Indian cinema is not uncomfortable. Indian cinema has remained away from global diplomacy since the beginning. Just like India’s foreign policy, so is the policy of Indian cinema. Indian films reflect humanism, familiality and sociality. This thinking of India holds a unique place in the world. Therefore, neither America nor Russia has any aversion to Indian cinema, rather both are equally popular among the rival countries. But in this also Russia has had the upper hand. There are many reasons for this. The biggest reason is the social and cultural similarity of both the countries.
This is the reason why the cultural relationship between India and Russia has existed for a long time. From former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru to current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both the countries have remained friendly countries. During Pt. Nehru’s time, India had as cordial relations with Joseph Stalin and Nikita Khrushchev as it does today in the era of Modi and Putin. Indian art, culture and cinema have been greatly liked in Russia since then. Raj Kapoor’s films were widely watched there. In Raj Kapoor’s films, the songs sung by Mukesh were sung and sung by the common people and even senior Russian leaders. In later times, the films of Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty and Shahrukh Khan were liked a lot in Russia.
Putin praised the vagabond, the soldier
The matter is not very old. The 16th BRICS summit was held in October 2024. Russia was the guest country at the conference held in Kazan. Vladimir Putin had arrived. During this time the talk of films also came up. There was discussion ranging from permission for shooting in Russia to Indian films. BRICS member countries expressed their desire to shoot films in Russia. After which Putin’s love for cinema became popular. Started praising Indian cinema. In particular he took the names of many Hindi films.
He said that Indian films are very popular in Russia. He also mentioned Raj Kapoor’s Awara, Shree 420 and Mithun Chakraborty’s Disco Dancer to Shahrukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathan. Putin had said that India and member countries can work to promote their respective art and culture in Russia. He also talked about setting up a cinema academy.
Modi also remembered ‘red cap’ in Moscow
You might remember that earlier on July 9, 2024, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to Moscow, he had also mentioned the songs of Raj Kapoor’s film. He had said- “Here, a song used to be sung in every household… Sar pe laal topi Rusi phir bhi dil hai Hindustani… This song may have become old, but its sentiments are evergreen even today. Artists like Raj Kapoor and Mithun da strengthened the friendship between India and Russia. I would like to appreciate President Putin that he has taken a step forward to further strengthen this partnership.”
Russian Cinema vs Hollywood Films
If we talk about current Russian cinema, there is a strong emphasis on nationalism there. Russian cinema does not compete commercially with the cinema of Hollywood, China, Japan and Iran, but it definitely takes Putin’s nationalist policy forward. If Hollywood makes films according to American policy regarding Russia and Ukraine, then Russia also responds with a different strategy. Russia gives friendship honor to Putin supporter US actor Steven Seagal, while a film named ‘Putin’ is also made on Putin in Hollywood. This film has been released in 2025 itself, which is based on Putin’s political story.
It is noteworthy that at one time Putin used to meet Hollywood celebrities. In 2010, celebrities like Kevin Costner, Sharon Stone, Kurt Russell also participated in a charity show in St. Petersburg. Putin was seen singing songs from a Hollywood film. But after the attack on Ukraine in 2022, Russia was boycotted on many fronts in the West and Hollywood stopped releasing films in Russia. Although Putin emerged as an aggressive leader after the war with Ukraine, his impact has been seen on war movies there and also in Hollywood.
