Usually, seeing an octopus creates fear or a strange uneasiness in people’s minds. The reason for this is its unique body, long sticky tentacles and mysterious behavior. But sometimes this sea creature looks so small and innocent that humans are unable to recognize the danger. A similar experience was seen with journalist Andy McConnell. Where he was strolling on the beach and he saw a very cute octopus on the sand.
Andy found this octopus so small and attractive that he picked it up in his hand and made a video of it. In the video, the octopus appeared calm and it did not appear from anywhere that it could be a dangerous creature. Andy had no idea at that time that the creature he was holding in his hand, considering it cute, was one of the most poisonous sea creatures in the world. If that octopus had bitten him, he could have died.
Who is this creature?
Actually that octopus was the Blue Ringed Octopus, which is counted among the most poisonous creatures in the world. It may look small and beautiful, but the poison present in its body can prove fatal for humans. According to the Australian Institute of Marine Science, some special bacteria are found in the salivary gland of this octopus. These bacteria produce a very powerful neurotoxin, which is called tetrodotoxin.
Tetrodotoxin is so dangerous that it directly affects the human nervous system. This poison blocks the signals going to the brain through the nerves, due to which the body parts can gradually stop functioning. In many cases, the victim starts having trouble breathing and if timely treatment is not received, death can also occur. The most scary thing is that the pain caused by the bite of a blue ringed octopus is often very minimal, due to which humans do not even realize the danger.
barely saved life
After Andy McConnell’s video surfaced, it quickly went viral on social media. Seeing this, people were both surprised and scared. Many people wrote in the comments that Andy’s survival is no less than a miracle. Some users said that they started feeling nervous while watching the video, because they knew how dangerous this octopus could be. Many people expressed concern that such videos can give wrong messages to people without proper information.
