
Adarsh Behera from Odisha was held captive for 45 days in Sudan, Africa. Adarsh Behera is 36 years old. After being in captivity for so many days, he returned to Odisha on Wednesday. After his safe return, his family members heaved a sigh of relief. Welcoming his safe return, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said that the state government had taken the matter very seriously as soon as information about Adarsh’s disappearance was received.
Taking to social media, Majhi said that it is a matter of great joy that Adarsh Kumar Behera, a young Odia man from Jagatsinghpur district who had gone missing in Sudan, has returned safely to his motherland. Majhi said that we were continuously coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure their safe rescue. With the immediate action of the Government of India and the cooperation of international mediators, Adarsh returned to his family today.
Majhi said that he thanked the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Sudan for this successful mission. He said that ‘be it within the state or abroad, the safety and well-being of every Odia is the biggest priority of our government. We are and will always be with you in times of crisis.
The family went to pick up Adarsh at the airport
Adarsh Behera had gone missing from Al-Fashir city in Sudan’s North Darfur state. A senior official said that the Indian government got him released with the help of international mediators. After his release, Adarsh was met by his family, including his three-year-old son, at Biju Patnaik International Airport. He said that this is the second birth for me.
I had no hope of survival after being kidnapped by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Sudan. He said that he tortured me a lot. I was not allowed to eat food for several days. They put me in jail and forced me to walk in the forest. He said that thank God he did not kill me. While talking to the media he said that he could have done anything.
Adarsh is a resident of Kotkana village in Jagatsinghpur district. He went to civil war-ravaged Sudan in 2022 and worked as a mechanic in a plastic factory. After being released from captivity, Behera flew to Hyderabad from Abu Dhabi late on Tuesday night and reached Bhubaneswar airport this morning.
