Teenagers are taking help of AI chatbot to overcome loneliness! The figures will surprise you

November 28, 2025 by Uma Shankar

Loneliness is increasing rapidly among teenagers around the world and they are turning to AI chatbots for emotional support. A new study has revealed that AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini are no longer just a solution to homework, but are becoming digital companions. The survey also found that 2 out of every 5 teenagers are taking the help of AI for advice and emotional support. Experts are considering this as a sign of increasing social disconnection.

What was found in the study: Teenagers’ trust in AI is increasing

According to the study, more than 5,000 UK teenagers aged 11 to 18 reported that they are turning to AI chatbots for advice, company and support. This dependence has increased rapidly with increasing age and most of the 18 year old teenagers admitted that they take guidance from ChatGPT or Google Gemini. According to researchers, chatbots have emerged as a new type of digital companion for teenagers.

More boys than girls are taking help of AI

The survey revealed that boys are using AI chatbots more than girls. They depend on these tools not only for studies or practical information but also for emotional conversation and companionship. Statistics show that as age increases, this use is seen more in boys, which may indicate distance from social behavior and conversation.

No more homework, now chatbot for emotional support

About 14 percent of the teenagers involved in the research admitted that they sought advice from chatbots for friendship-related problems. 11 percent talked about mental health concerns, while 12 percent said they just needed to talk to someone so they turned to chatbots. More than half of the participants said that they use these digital tools to understand everyday problems and stress.

APA warns: AI chatbots could increase loneliness

The American Psychological Association has advised children and teenagers to be cautious. The organization says that AI chatbots may provide immediate relief, but in the long term they can further distance teenagers from real social relationships. Experts believe that increasing emotional attachment with AI can deepen loneliness and is worrisome for mental health.
