There are less than 50 days left for the T20 World Cup 2025, but even before that, some big changes are being seen. Where the Italian team, which is participating in the World Cup for the first time, has dismissed its captain Joe Burns and appointed a new captain. Now former champion Sri Lanka has also taken a big decision and suddenly changed the captain. Star all-rounder Dasun Shanka, who was removed from the captaincy of Sri Lanka about two and a half years ago, has again been given the command of the team.
Why did Shanaka get the captaincy?
In India and Sri Lanka from 7th February t20 world cup 2026 Will start. But just before this, Sri Lanka Cricket decided to change its captain. On December 19, the board released its list of 25 probable players for the World Cup and in this, experienced all-rounder Dasun Shanka has been given the command of the team. Shanaka has got this responsibility in place of Charith Asalanka, who was suddenly removed by the Sri Lankan board. Shanaka also recently participated in the IPL auction, where he did not find any buyer.
Pramodaya Wickremasinghe, who returned as the chief selector of SLC, attributed this decision to Charit Asalanka’s poor form and said that Asalanka has the experience of 3 World Cups, due to which this decision has been taken. He also told that Asalanka will remain a part of the team and expressed hope that he will soon return to form after being freed from the pressure of captaincy and will perform strongly. Asalanka was made the captain of the team only in 2024 and recently he was the captain of the team during the Pakistan tour.
Is this why Charit Asalanka was discharged?
However, Asalanka’s departure from captaincy seemed almost certain and the real reason for this was his sudden decision to leave the team during the Pakistan tour. In fact, there was a suicide blast in Islamabad during the ODI series on the Pakistan tour in November, after which the Sri Lankan players under the leadership of Asalanka expressed their desire to return back to the country. But then the Sri Lankan board had given a strict warning to the players to stay there and complete the series. Only after this, Asalanka was dropped from the 3-nation T20 series and Shanaka was made the captain.
