SIR’s fear or Mamta’s strategy! What is the truth about the infiltrators who gathered on the Bangladesh border?

November 28, 2025 by Uma Shankar

There is a continuous crowd of people who have illegally entered India from Bangladesh at the Hakimpur border outpost of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, adjacent to Bangladesh. People reaching Hakimpur with children and women are pleading with BSF soldiers to go back to Bangladesh. Their pictures and videos are going viral on social media. It is being claimed that due to fear of SIR, Bangladeshi infiltrators living in India for a long time are now returning back to Bangladesh.

After this news and pictures went viral, West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose himself Hakimpur Border Reached the outpost and reviewed the situation there. The Governor reviewed reports of alleged ‘reverse migration’ of illegal Bangladeshis.

However, on Wednesday, the day the Governor reached the border outpost. That day, a group of people returning to Bangladesh were missing. There was neither any queue nor crowd of people who wanted to return to Bangladesh.

Crowd of Bangladeshis at Hakimpur outpost

The Governor had visited Hakimpur outpost on Wednesday, but after his return, again a crowd of illegal Bangladeshis gathered at Hakimpur outpost and they want to return back to Bangladesh.

It is noteworthy that most of the people returning to Bangladesh are from Muslim community and most of them say that they had entered India illegally, but now the process of SIR is going on and the work of purification of voter list is going on. In such a situation, his or his family’s name is not in the SIR list of 2002 or 2003. In such a situation, they are apprehensive and fear that they will be sent out of the country. Because of this they automatically want to return to Bangladesh.

Is fear of SIR the reason for returning to Bangladesh?

Senior political analyst Partha Mukhopadhyay is raising questions regarding these claims. He says that after Bangladesh became independent in 1971, a large number of Bangladeshi refugees came to India. India recognized him as a refugee. Utbastu (refugee) colonies were built for them in Assam and West Bengal. Even after that, infiltrators have been coming to India from Bangladesh for a long time and this is well known. From the state government to the central government, they are accepting that Bangladeshi infiltrators in India are in different areas of the country via Bengal. These infiltrators have not only made the EPIC card here, but many also have land and property along with Aadhar card, PAN card.

He says that when things have become almost clear that through the SIR process, even if those people face difficulty in including their names in the voter list, whose names are not those of their parents, grandparents or maternal grandparents, but they have 12 valid certificates like passport, domicile certificate, then they can get their names included in the voter list. In such a situation, questions are being raised on the veracity of the talk of Bangladeshi infiltrators fleeing due to fear of SIR.

Mamata is creating fear regarding SIR, BJP alleges

On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee is continuously opposing SIR and has compared SIR to NRC and is trying to create fear among a particular community, especially Muslims and Bangladeshis who have settled in India after coming from Bangladesh. Even before this, during the 2021 Assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee had made CAA and NRC a big issue and was successful in polarizing Muslim votes regarding it. The population of Muslims in Bengal is about 32 percent. Among them, there are a large number of Bengali speaking Muslims, who have connections with Bangladesh.

In such a situation, Trinamool Congress is using the death of BLO and the fear of SIR as a political weapon and even though SIR has not become an issue in Bihar elections, Mamata Banerjee is busy giving it a political colour. However, BJP is continuously accusing Mamata Banerjee that she is trying to create confusion regarding SIR.

Leader of Opposition in Bengal Assembly, Subhendu Adhikari claims that Mamata Banerjee is creating confusion among the people in the name of SIR and is creating terror among the people regarding it. He said that Mamata Banerjee will not be able to stop SIR. They fear that their voter names of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators will be deleted. That is why she is making personal attacks on the Chief Electoral Officer and abusing the Election Commission, but in this election the people of the state will vote her out of power.
