SIR in Bengal: Declared dead in draft voter list, person reached municipality office to get death certificate

The Election Commission in West Bengal has recently published the draft voter list, but controversies are continuously arising regarding the draft voter list. Aatish Aziz, son of CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammad Salim, has been accused of changing the surname to Awasthi. Purna Saha, a resident of Kalna in East Bardhaman district, has been declared dead, although he is alive. On Wednesday he reached the municipal office and demanded the death certificate.

On behalf of the Election Commission on 16 February draft voter list Is released. Purna Saha says that when he saw the draft voter list, he was shocked. He has been shown dead in the draft voter list.

Seeing the word dead in front of his name, Purna Saha, a resident of Kalna in East Burdwan, reached Municipality and. He asked for his death certificate from Kalna Municipality.

In the draft list, a living person was declared dead.

42 year old Purna Saha is a resident of booth number 204 of ward number 12 of Kalna Municipality. He had filled the Enumeration Form and submitted it to the BLO on 16th November. He also has a copy of the receipt, but in the draft voter list, his name is shown as dead.

Seeing this, Purna Saha himself reached Kalna Municipality on Wednesday afternoon to collect his death certificate. There he said, “I am dead in the draft voter list of the Election Commission. Give me a death certificate.” Later, after coming out of the municipality, he said, “Even after filling the form, they declared me dead. That’s why I have come to get the death certificate.” After receiving the complaint, Trinamool councilor Sandeep Bose inquired in the area and found that Purna Saha’s name was indeed in the list of the dead.

Election officer assured investigation

Purna Saha’s wife said, “The BLO did not come to our house to collect the forms. He came to the adjacent house. We gave all the forms there. Now when I saw deceased in the list and opened the form, I saw it written dead there too. However, my and my mother-in-law’s names are correct.”

Regarding this, Kalna Sub-Divisional Magistrate said that BLO and AERO have been asked to submit a report as to why this incident happened. Action will be taken after receiving the report.
