She wanted to marry God, but apart from Rukmini, Lord Krishna had 16107 other queens. According to mythology, there was a demon named Bhumasura. He decided to sacrifice 16 thousand girls for immortality.
Married after appearing in 16 thousand forms
Shri Krishna freed these girls from the demon’s imprisonment and sent them back home. However, this story did not end there. When all the girls reached their respective homes, their family members pointed fingers at their character and refused to accept them. Then Shri Krishna appeared in 16 thousand forms and married everyone. Apart from this marriage, Shri Krishna also performed love marriages.
When Shri Krishna reached Indraprastha to meet the Pandavas, one day he took Arjun for a forest trip. In the forest where they were wandering, Surya’s daughter Kalindi was doing penance to get God as her husband. Then to fulfill Kalindi’s wish, Shri Krishna married her. The wives of Shri Krishna are called Patraniyas.
Shri Krishna had 1 lakh 61 thousand 80 sons.
It is said that Lord Krishna had only 8 wives, whose names were Rukmani, Jambavanti, Satyabhama, Kalindi Mitrabinda, Satya, Bhadra and Lakshmana. According to the Puranas, Shri Krishna had 1 lakh 61 thousand 80 sons. All his wives gave birth to 10 sons and one daughter each. Thus, he had 1 lakh 61 thousand 80 sons and 16 thousand 108 daughters.
Lord Krishna blessed and gave children
The 16,000 marriages performed by Lord Krishna are said to be a part of social responsibility and divine leela. All these 16,000 women could not live a normal household life with Shri Krishna, but they all lived independently in Dwarka and kept singing bhajans and kirtans. Later attained salvation through penance. It is said that when all the queens desired motherhood, God blessed them and provided them with children.
