
The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in Assam on Saturday protested against the tribalization of six ethnic groups. Students of Boroland University started protesting ahead of the presentation of the report of the Ministerial Group on Tribalization of six caste groups in the Assam Assembly on Saturday. Within no time, a mob of students entered the BTC Secretariat and vandalized it extensively.
The report of the ministerial group of six ethnic groups was presented in the Assembly on Saturday evening. Minister Ronoj Pegu has presented the report. Now this report will be sent to the Centre. The state cabinet has approved the report, which was tabled in the House on Wednesday. Students are protesting against this. It is being told that more security forces had already been deployed in the area.
But tension still remains and the situation is out of control.
breaking into the secretariat
The students on Saturday marched to the Boroland Regional Council Secretariat, six kilometers away from the university campus. After this, the students started protesting in front of the Secretariat against the tribalization of six ethnic groups. Meanwhile, some protesters allegedly broke the barricades and entered the secretariat and started vandalizing it. The students broke the chairs and other furniture kept inside. Somehow the local police used mild force on the students and drove them out of there.
Students boycotted the final examination of third semester
Meanwhile, the state Cabinet is said to have approved the report of the Group of Ministers proposing to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six ethnic groups of Assam: Tai Ahom, Chutiya, Maran, Matak, Koch-Rajbongshi and Tea tribe. Students of Boroland University boycotted the final examinations of third semester on the campus in protest against this decision of the cabinet. Students say that the report is not acceptable under any circumstances. This decision of the government is being opposed. The government will have to withdraw this decision.
A rally was also taken out on Thursday
Earlier, Sadao Boro Student Union and several tribal organizations had taken out a rally in Kokrajhar city on Thursday. The protesters said that granting Scheduled Tribe status to the six communities would reduce the rights and constitutional protections of existing tribal groups, which could affect education and employment opportunities. The government should think about this also, but they are not ready to listen to anyone. In a way, the government is acting like a dictator.
ABSU President Deepen Boro appealed to the students
At the same time, after the violent protests on Saturday, All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) President Deepen Boro has appealed to the protesters to maintain peace and harmony. He said, protests should be non-violent, democratic and peaceful. I humbly request everyone to maintain peace and harmony. The students who had entered the BTC Secretariat in Kokrajhar on their own initiative should return to their homes and educational institutions as this Secretariat is the temple of our governance and the pride of democracy.
