On November 25, the Union Home Ministry had directed to change the names of Raj Bhavans across the country to Lok Bhavan and all Raj Niwas to Lok Niwas. After which it was first implemented in Bengal. Now Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin has given a sharp reaction regarding this.
CA MK Stalin termed changing the name of Raj Bhavan to Lok Bhavan as just a show and said that there is a need for change in mentality and thinking to follow democratic principles. He said that changing the name is less important than changing the mentality and said that only the Legislative Assemblies are the platform of the people.
Chief Minister asked sharp questions
The Chief Minister has shared a post on social media, in which he attacked the Center and asked, ‘For those who do not respect the Assemblies, is changing the name of Raj Bhavan to ‘People’s Palace’ an eyewash?’. He said, ‘Is changing the name of ‘Lok Bhawan’ like throwing dust in the eyes of those who neither care about the public platform nor the legislature? Is this an attempt to tarnish the basic concept of democracy?’
‘Respecting legislative assemblies is the need of the hour’
He said that the need of the hour is to respect the governments elected by the people and the assemblies that fulfill the wishes of the people. CM said, ‘The need of the hour is that due respect should be given to the sovereign legislature to fulfill the aspirations of the duly elected government and citizens. And if there is no change in thinking and behavior, then the mere change in nomenclature is unnecessary. He said that if there is no change in thought and action then this step is unnecessary.
‘Those who do not respect the assembly are changing their names’
Tagging a report regarding changing the name of Raj Bhavan to Lok Bhavan, Stalin said in a social media post that the state assembly is the people’s house. He asked, ‘Those who do not respect the assembly are changing the name, so is this a show? Is this tantamount to betraying the principles of democracy?’.
This sharp reaction of the CM comes after the Modi government accepted the suggestion of Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and made the name change effective. With this change, Raj Bhavan located in Guindy, Chennai has got a new look.
There has been a situation of conflict between Governor Ravi and the DMK government since it assumed power. The DMK government led by Stalin and Governor R.N. Tension continues between Ravi on policy matters and approving the bills passed by the Assembly.
