The Punjab-Haryana High Court has taken cognizance of the public murder of Punjab’s Kabaddi player and promoter Rana Balachauria during the Kabaddi tournament in Mohali and considering the matter as serious, has sought a response from the Punjab government.
The High Court has directed the Punjab Government that during the next hearing, the State Government should tell what arrangements were made for police security at the event in which Rana Balachauria was murdered and how many policemen were present at the spot. The court has taken suo motu cognizance of this while hearing the case of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s jail interview.
How was Rana Balachauria murdered?
Rana Balachauria had reached Sector 82, Mohali on 15 December 2025 to participate in the Sohna Sahib Kabaddi Cup tournament. While he was taking a selfie with one of his fans in the middle of the tournament, he was shot in the head by assailants sitting in ambush in front of hundreds of spectators. The attackers also fired bullets in the air so that the spectators got scared and ran away from there.
The attackers were linked to the Bambiha gang, who claimed responsibility on social media. The gang called it revenge for the murder of Sidhu Moose Walia, because Rana was accused of providing shelter to Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang members and was associated with Moose Wala’s killers.
The government will have to answer the court
The High Court said that the government will have to tell what the tournament security arrangements were like at the time of the massacre, how many people were present in the program and what was the role of the administration after the incident. The High Court also commented that such incidents raise serious questions on law and order and the Punjab government will have to present all the facts related to this in the court.
