Problems may increase for Sonia Gandhi and Rahul, ED reaches Delhi High Court in National Herald case

December 19, 2025 by Uma Shankar

The problems of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi may increase in the money laundering case related to National Herald. Recently, Special Judge Vishal Gogane of Rouse Avenue Court had refused to take cognizance of the ED charge sheet. However, the court had said that the ED can continue the investigation if it wants. Now ED has appealed in the Delhi High Court challenging the trial court’s decision.

The ED has questioned the trial court’s findings and sought appellate review of its decision to refuse to proceed with the complaint. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had named Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, Sunil Bhandari, Young Indian and Dotex Merchandise Private Limited in its charge sheet.

Relief was received only 3 days ago

Let us tell you that only 3 days ago, Sonia, Rahul and others got a big relief in this matter. Rouse Avenue Court had refused to take cognizance of the charge sheet filed by ED in the case. Congress was seeing this as a big relief. ED had filed a charge sheet against the accused under PMLA on 9 April.

The court had given its decision on the application filed by EOW. It was also said that information related to the FIR can be given to the accused. In November 2025, ED had given information to Delhi Police under Section 66(2) of PMLA. On the basis of that, the EOW of police had registered a new FIR against Sonia, Rahul and others on 3 October 2025.

What is the National Herald case?

This matter has become a bone of political and legal controversy. It started in 2012 with the complaint of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. It is associated with the Associated Journals Limited (AJL) company, which ran the National Herald newspaper. AJL was burdened with debt. Then Congress gave it an interest-free loan of Rs 90.25 crore.

After this, this loan was transferred to Young Indian Private Limited Company for just Rs 50 lakh. Through this, AJL’s assets worth billions of rupees came under the control of YIL. ED says that this was a conspiracy, in which government property was grabbed for personal gain. There was fraud and money laundering in this.
