Pradosh Vrat significance: Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha of every month is considered dedicated to Lord Mahadev. It is believed that Pradosh fast is observed for Lord Shiva on every Trayodashi date. At some places, Pradosh Vrat is also known as “Pradosham”. On Pradosh Vrat, there is a tradition to worship Lord Shiva during Pradosh period. Very few people would know why we observe Pradosh Vrat and what is its mythological significance. Margashirsha Pradosh Vrat 2025

Pradosh fast of the second i.e. Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month will be observed on Tuesday, 2 December. Trayodashi Tithi will start on December 2 at 3:57 pm. At the same time, Trayodashi Tithi will end the next day on 3rd December at 12:25 pm. In such a situation, it would be auspicious to observe Pradosh fast on 2nd December. Since it falls on Tuesday, it will be called Bhaum Pradosh Vrat. On Bhaum Pradosh Vrat Pradosh Kaal on 2nd December from 5:24 pm to 8:07 pm Will remain.

What is Pradosh Vrat? (What is Pradosh vrat)

Pradosh Vrat is a fast observed on Trayodashi tithi of every month, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This fast is observed during Pradosh Kaal (about one and a half hour before and after sunset). There is a religious belief that it removes all types of defects and sins and bestows the blessings of Lord Shiva. It is said that observing Pradosh fast brings wealth, children, happiness, prosperity and salvation and removes mental stress.

Importance of Pradosh Kaal

According to religious belief, during Pradosh period, Lord Shiva dances on Mount Kailash and all the gods and goddesses praise him. At this time, Lord Shiva danced between the horns of his vehicle Nandi, hence Nandi is given special importance in Pradosh Puja. Pradosh Vrat can be started from Trayodashi of Shukla Paksha of any month, but starting from Trayodashi of Shravan and Kartik month is considered especially auspicious.

Mainly Pradosh Vrat is observed to please Lord Shiva and seek his blessings. This fast is considered very auspicious in Kaliyuga and through this one gets freedom from all types of defects, diseases and sufferings. There is also a belief that observing this Pradosh fast brings happiness, prosperity and fulfillment of wishes at home.

Pradosh vrat story

According to mythology, two main events took place on Pradosh Vrat – first, during the churning of the ocean, when Lord Shiva saved the universe by drinking Halahal poison. Secondly, on the day of Trayodashi, Lord Shiva cured Chandradev’s tuberculosis and gave him life. Due to these two mythological stories, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Shiva on Trayodashi date during Pradosh period.

Samudra Manthan incident

According to the legend, when the extremely poisonous Halahal poison came out during the churning of the ocean, Lord Shiva embraced it around his neck to save the universe. Due to that poison, his throat turned blue and he started feeling unbearable burning sensation, to calm down which the Gods worshiped him with water and Bel leaves. Also, during this Pradosh period, all the gods praised Lord Shiva. This incident happened during Pradosh period on Trayodashi date. For this reason, Pradosh fast is observed on every Trayodashi date and Lord Shiva is worshiped during Pradosh period.

Chandradev incident

According to another legend, when Chandradev was suffering from tuberculosis and was in death-like pain, Lord Shiva freed him from the disease on the day of Trayodashi and brought him back to life. After this incident, Trayodashi date came to be called ‘Pradosh’.
