
Paush Amavasya 2025 Maha Upay: In Hindu religion, the date of Amavasya is very sacred and special. Today is the new moon day of Krishna Paksha of Pausha month. This Amavasya is considered to have even greater importance. Paush month is also called ‘Chhota Pitru Paksha’. Therefore, the work done for the ancestors on this day reaches them directly. Amavasya night is the darkest.
It is believed that on this day ancestors come to earth, hence their path is illuminated through the donation of lamps. By donating a lamp on this day, the ancestors are pleased and bless their descendants with happiness, prosperity and health. Lighting a lamp on the day of Amavasya removes the problems coming in life due to Pitra Dosh. Lighting lamps in the right place and number on Paush Amavasya removes sorrows.
Where to light lamps for ancestors on Paush Amavasya

On the day of Paush Amavasya, a lamp should be lit for the ancestors in the south direction of the house. According to Vastu and scriptures, the south direction is considered to be of ancestors. Ancestors reside in this direction. On the evening of Amavasya, a lamp should be lit in the south corner of the house.
On the banks of the river or under the Peepal tree
If possible, a lamp should be donated on the banks of any holy river like Ganga, Yamuna on the day of Paush Amavasya. If there is no river nearby then a lamp should be lit under a Peepal tree. Gods reside on the Peepal tree, hence lighting a lamp under this tree is very auspicious.

On the day of Paush Amavasya, a lamp should be kept near the door frame of the house and also near the drinking water point. Because it is believed that ancestors also come to the place of water.
How many lamps to light?
On the day of Paush Amavasya, at least 1 or 2 lamps should be lit mainly in the name of ancestors. One in the south direction and the other where drinking water is kept. For freedom from Pitra Dosh and special blessings, 5, 11 or 21 lamps should be lit. These lamps should be placed near the main doors of the house, Peepal trees, temples and river banks.
