Often such news comes to light in the world which is difficult to believe, but they are completely true. One such case came to light from Vincenza city of Italy, which surprised people. Here a 70 year old man kept everyone believing for 53 years that he was completely blind. On the basis of this lie, he obtained an amount of more than one million euros as disability allowance from the government. Taking advantage of government benefits on the basis of a false identity for more than half a century seems no less than a film story.
This whole matter came into limelight when Italy’s financial police became suspicious of this person’s behaviour. Nearly five decades ago, he was injured in a work-related accident and was subsequently recorded as completely blind in government records. From that time onwards he started receiving disability allowance. He deposited this money year after year and within no time the amount reached millions of euros. For a long time no one suspected his lies, but recently the authorities noticed something wrong in his activities.

As the suspicion grew stronger, the police decided to keep him under surveillance. His daily activities were monitored for about two months and video footage was also prepared. Whatever came to light during this period proved the police’s suspicions true. The recording clearly showed that he was working comfortably in his garden, pruning plants and using the tools properly. Apart from this, he used to go alone to the market and buy goods, examine the goods in his hands in the shops and then pay in cash. His gait and behavior did not at all seem as if he was deprived of vision.
After gathering all this evidence, the Vincenza prosecutor’s office filed a case of fraud against him. After causing wrongful financial loss to the government for so many years, all its benefits were immediately stopped.

The financial police also issued an order to stop all the assistance he received under welfare and social security schemes. Along with this, the tax department issued a tax order on the income of about two lakh euros received on false grounds in the last 5 years.
This whole matter is not just a story of fraud, but also a warning that long-term flaws in any administrative system can become a big loss for both the society and the government. Many times the facilities given on the basis of trust go into wrong hands and the real needy people are left behind. This incident in Italy showed that no matter how much time it takes for the truth to come out, lies cannot remain hidden forever.
