You must have shared live location or current location a lot in your smartphone. Now this facility is going to be available for laptops also. Google is now testing such a feature in its Chrome browser through which users will be able to share approximate location with websites not only from phones but also from laptops. This means that websites will not get your exact GPS location but only an estimated area, which will increase both privacy and control. This feature is visible in the Chrome version of Android under A/B testing and is expected to be rolled out to all devices soon. Besides, Chrome is also getting a new Material 3 based design update.
New Approximate Location feature coming in Chrome
According to the report by Android Authority, a new Approximate Location option has appeared in Chrome for Android version 142.0.7444.171. Its function is to show websites only your area or surrounding location area instead of giving your exact GPS location. With this, sites that only need broad location will not be able to get unnecessary precise data. Whereas sites that require map navigation or location-based services will be able to request precise location separately.
How will the new location toggle work?
After the new setting, Chrome keeps precise location access at the app-level, but the user can choose Approximate Location at the website-level. That means Chrome will not decide, rather the users themselves will choose how much data to give to which site. It was told in the report that this feature has been kept in A/B testing, that is, it will not be available immediately in all phones. It can also be enabled first through Chrome’s experimental setting chrome://flags.
New Material 3 design upgrade will also be available
Along with the location feature, a visual refresh has also started in Chrome, the version of which has reached more than 141 devices. The new update is based on Google’s Material 3 Expressive design, with subtle but noticeable changes to the three-dot menu, bookmark icon and interface. This makes Chrome more modern, cleaner and easier to use.
