
Punjab Police has now received a setback from the Punjab-Haryana High Court in the arrest of Kanchanpreet Kaur, daughter of Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, who was the Shiromani Akali candidate in the Tarn Taran by-election. Raising questions on the arrest, the court has handed over the custody of Kanchanpreet from the police to the Tarn Taran judge. The court has directed to keep Kanchanpreet Kaur in the custody of the magistrate. Along with this, the court also ordered that until Kanchanpreet’s lawyer arrives, she will not be presented in the court for remand.
The High Court raised questions on the action of Punjab Police and asked how the person who himself joined the investigation was arrested. The court said that it wants to ensure transparency in the process of investigation and arrest. After this the police brought Kanchanpreet to Tarn Taran court. The High Court also said that the hearing should not take place until Kanchanpreet’s lawyers Arshdeep Kaler and Damanpreet Sobti reach Tarn Taran from Chandigarh to represent Kanchanpreet.

After this, this matter will now be heard in Tarn Taran court at 8 pm. Arshdeep Kaler and lawyer Damanpreet Sobti will defend this case. The court said how the arrest took place illegally. Punjab Police has registered 4 cases against Kanchanpreet, which Shiromani Akali Dal has called politically motivated. This whole controversy has been going on since the Tarn Taran assembly by-election campaign. However, the Aam Aadmi Party candidate has won the elections.
Shiromani Akali Dal raised questions on the arrest
After the arrest of Kanchanpreet and the order of the High Court, the case has created a stir at both political and legal levels. Shiromani Akali Dal on Saturday said that the arrest of Kanchanpreet Kaur, daughter of party candidate for Tarn Taran by-election, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, is a violation of High Court orders. He thanked the court for intervening in the case and staying the police remand till the case is heard in the lower court this evening.
Claim of former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha
Here, former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha has claimed that in the Tarn Taran court, the police presented another woman as Kanchanpreet. The police personnel took Kanchanpreet inside through the back gate. Another girl was dressed and a drama was staged in front of the media by covering her face. Punjab Police has registered 4 cases against Kanchanpreet. Valtoha said that the present government has targeted Kanchanpreet for political reasons. He alleges that in the tradition of Punjab, the daughters-in-law of the opponents are respected, but the AAP government did not spare even the daughters-in-law of the opponents. He said that cases are being registered as part of political propaganda so that any young leader can be stopped from moving forward. He also told that the court gave relief to Kanchanpreet from arrest and directed that in any new case, information should be given 7 days in advance.
