Name of CPI-M Secretary Mohammad Salim’s son changed from Aziz to ‘Awasthi’, ruckus over draft voter list in Bengal

After the release of draft voter list in view of SIR in West Bengal, many types of allegations are coming to the fore. Trinamool councilor was declared dead in the draft voter list. Now Aatish Aziz, son of CPI-M (CPI-M) Bengal State Secretary Mohammad Salim, has been accused of changing the surname in the draft voter list. He alleges that in the draft voter list, his surname has been written as Awasthi instead of Aziz.

Mohammad Salim’s son Aatish Aziz has alleged irregularities in the draft electoral roll published by the Election Commission. He has claimed that a Hindu surname, ‘Awasthi’, has been added to both his and his father’s names.

In a social media post, Aziz said that he is a registered voter in the Kolkata Port Assembly seat and his name in the official records is Aatish Aziz. Although, draft electoral roll While verifying the entry, he noticed that the surname “Awasthi” was added to his name, and the same mistake appeared in his father’s entry as well.

Aziz said, “If such a mistake can happen in the case of someone who has been in public life for decades, then it raises serious questions about what ordinary voters may have to face.”

He questioned the reason behind undertaking a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which costs crores of rupees, if basic mistakes keep coming to light.

‘Aziz’ changed to ‘Awasthi’

Aziz made a scathing comment, writing that sections of the media and BJP had claimed that SIR would be used to target Muslims, but instead by adding surnames in the process, “my father Mohammad Salim and I were made Brahmins.”

Aziz also shared photographs of the draft list to prove his claim and said that the booth-level agent of CPI(M) has taken up the matter with the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. The draft electoral rolls were published on December 16 after digitization of the counting forms under the first phase of the SIR exercise. On the other hand, the Election Commission has said that the matter is being investigated. If the Commission has made any mistake, it will be corrected.
