According to cyber security firm CloudSEK, the websites steal payment and personal information, which can then be used for financial fraud or identity theft. Unlike earlier random scams, the Black Friday sale scam is a large organized operation, with fake sites pretending to be from big brands like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Amazon.
According to CloudSEK, more than 2000 fake websites have been detected ahead of this year’s Black Friday sale. These sites have all the trappings of real online stores, like festival banners, countdown clocks, and fake reviews. Scammers try their best to harm the buyers by adding these things on the website, the company’s objective behind adding all these things is that the customers can make quick purchases without checking whether the site is genuine or fake. Attackers mainly target payment information and personal details, which can be used to steal money or commit identity fraud.
What to do to avoid it?
- Do not get lured by any tempting offer and to avoid scams, first check the URL and buy only from the official website.
- Avoid sites that offer huge discounts of 70 to 90 percent.
- Check for spelling mistakes in the URL.
