
The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the police on a writ petition filed by a woman lawyer alleging that she was illegally detained for fourteen hours overnight at a police station in Noida and subjected to sexual harassment, torture and coercion by the police officers while discharging their professional duties.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and NV Anjari fixed the hearing on January 7, 2026 on the petition alleging violation of fundamental rights of the petitioner under Articles 14, 19(1)(G), 21 and 22 of the Constitution and issued notice to the UP government and police.
What is the whole matter?
The petitioner, who is a woman lawyer. It is alleged that she was subjected to 14 hours of illegal detention, custodial sexual harassment, torture and coercion by uniformed police personnel at the police station. An incident of sexual harassment took place on the late night of 3 December 2025 in Noida Sector 126, Uttar Pradesh, when she was discharging her professional duty towards her client.
The petitioner gave this argument
The petition filed through advocate Anilendra Pandey states that the petitioner is a practicing advocate registered with Shahdara Bar Association, Delhi. The petitioner has alleged that the incident occurred on the night of December 3, when she reached Noida Sector 126 police station in professional attire to assist her client, who had suffered serious head injuries and wanted to lodge an FIR.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the petition was accepted
While hearing the petition, the court said that generally such petitions are not accepted directly, but the issue of closure of CCTV cameras is also in the court’s attention, hence considering the seriousness of the allegations, this case is being accepted. The court has ordered Noida Police to keep the CCTV footage sealed and safe and present it before the court on January 7. Now it remains to be seen what facts are presented by the Noida Police in its defense and what kind of arguments are presented in the hearing to be held on January 7.
